Super Nintendo Entertainment System
In Japan, the console was known as the Super Famicom (short for Super Family Computer), the successor to the hugely successful Famicom. The console is usually known as it's acronym, the SNES. The SNES launched in:
- Japan on 21st November 1990 with a retail price of ¥25,000 (Yen).
- United States on 13st September 1991 with a retail price of $200 (USD). Packaged with Super Mario World and two controllers, it had a different design to both the Japanese and the European models.
- Europe on April 1992 with a retail price of £150 (GBP).

- CPU: WDC 65C816 16-bit (1.79, 2.68 or 3.58 Mhz switchable)
- Sound CPU: Sony SPC700 8-bit (4.1 MHz), 8-channel DSP with hardware codec similar to ADPCM
- Cartridge Size: 2 - 48 Megabits
- Resolution: typically 256x224 but 512x448 is possible
